Man to front court over faking death claims
The man arrested at the weekend has since been charged with conspiracy to murder and unlawful possession of drugs.
A statement from Queensland Police said the man was “in a stable condition in hospital in an overnight stable condition after he was allegedly placed in a bed by another man in the CBD”.
The statement said it was known the man was “an acquaintance of one or more persons of interest in relation to this incident”.
The arrest was made after a man was found in an apartment block near the Kings Highway around 1am on Sunday night.
It later emerged the man was, at the time of his arrest, in a similar vehicle to police found at the scene that day, and police claimed he was carrying a large bag.
Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has released a statement of condolences to the man’s family and friends.
“I am shocked by this terrible news,” Ms Palaszczuk said.
“In keeping with previous statements from the Queensland Government regarding the recent incident of an accidental discovery of a human body in the Kings Highway we have asked that any further information relating to the case be withheld.”
She said she and her team of “over 50” police officers and forensic experts are working together to trace this man.
“The Queensland Government does not condone these acts of reckless and unacceptable behaviour,” she said.
Queensland Opposition Leader Annastacia Palaszczuk has released a statement in response to the death.
“I am heartbroken to hear of my friend’s tragic death today after he was found deceased at the scene. The Queensland Government has been given an opportunity to find this man, but as I have already said, this was out of their hands,” she said.
Queensland Police Chief Inspector Bob Johnston said the man suspected of killing the 29-year-old will be taken to Manurewa Police Station for questioning.
The 28-year-old man who admitted to the alleged killing has now been arrested in relation to the incident, but his charges will be contested.
